Gluten-Free Wheat Treat Replacements

by Ane Axford on September 23, 2009

I generally just try to eat foods that are naturally gluten-free rather than foods that are processed or would regularly have wheat/gluten in them. However, these are snacks that I have found to be delicious and fairly healthy that I enjoy once in a while. I know, there are some gluten-free products that taste like card-board at best…or as one of my friends described a sample he tried at a grocery store of a gluten-free cracker: “a ceramic Spanish roof tile wrapped in string, topped with dirt”. I promise, these are more than just edible. I actually like everything that I recommend. Also, these should all be dairy-free, check labels to be sure. As I try to avoid cane sugar, many of them may be sugar-free as well.

Tinkyada is the only pasta that I have tried that I really like, and I have tried many. The way that it cooks is a bit different. The water gets a bit cloudy and white. However, the texture is great and even my gluten-eating friends can’t tell any difference. Plus, it’s made with brown rice which makes it much more nutritious than many other pastas. I was so thrilled to find out that lasagna was not a thing of the past.

Glutino
is generally a tasty brand. I like most of the things I have tried by them. These are the ones I like:

For a basic bowl of cereal–flakes, sort of like bran flakes/corn flakes, I like this:

For cookies, Pamela’s probably has my overall favorite. She has a lot of products that I have yet to try that look good.

More to come…

How sweet of you to advise on finding good gluten-free products! on top of your excellent counsel about accepting oneself as highly sensitive. I have been coping with my sensitivity all my life, and disorders for 10 years, and writing about it and working with hypnotherapy, and still your post on the link between autoimmunity and not accepting oneself as just right is one of the best understandings I've ever seen.

Pamela's cookies are indeed excellent–decadent and moist and delicious. I couldn't tell they were gluten-free. Almost too good! Glutino gluten-free crackers, on the other hand, are horrible. You're better off eating weird cardboard.
